During our building renovation, we discovered char

During our building renovation, we discovered charred beams, possibly dating back to the 1788 Good Friday fire. It's a humbling reminder of history's enduring impact on our present.
Following the Great Conflagration, famed adventurer Julien Poydras acquired the property. A French Navy veteran captured by the British in 1760, Poydras escaped to San Domingo via a West Indian merchant ship before settling in New Orleans. He penned Louisiana's first published poetry in 1779. His illustrious career included leading the Territory of Orleans' first legislative council, founding the New Orleans Female Orphan Asylum, and serving in the Eleventh Congress. He also presided over the state's first constitutional convention and was a presidential elector for Madison in 1812. Poydras lived to be 84.

In recounting the history of our building, so far we've noted previous owners Claude Trepagnier, Jean Baptiste Destrehan, the Colonial Treasurer of France and Pierre Phillipe de Marigny who was once the richest man in Louisiana. During Pierre Phillipe de Marigny's stint as owner, a devastating fire occurred in the French Quarter on Good Friday in 1788. This "Great Conflagration" burned 856 of the 1000 structures in the city. Said then Governor Miro of the disaster, "The tears, the heartbreaking sobs and the pallid faces of the wretched people mirrored the dire fatality that had overcome a city, now in ruins, transformed within the space of five hours into an arid and fearful, desert. Such was the sad ending of a work of death, the result of seventy years of industry."

The bar was removed from the hotel, placed on a barge and then floated down the river where it was subsequently moved to the building that now houses our restaurant. When we took over the building in 2000, the bar was located on the second floor. We remodeled and moved it to the first floor where a new generation of revelers are now cozying up for cocktails at this historic gem.

Additionally, guests hosting private events may choose to offer a reception with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the Lounge before progressing to a seated dinner in a private dining room. Often, when clients book the entire second floor, they will choose to hire a tarot card reader or caricature artist to perform in the Seance Lounge. And for those who are curious about summoning paranormal entities, we regret to inform that we do not host seances in our Seance Lounge.

After Trepagnier's ownership, other prominent New Orleans families like those of Jean Baptiste Destrehan and Pierre Philippe de Marigny (baptized and buried in the Cathedral) also owned this property.
Marigny had a son, Bernard, who lived flamboyantly in his youth. Dubbed the "Last great Creole gentleman," he squandered his fortune and died poor and isolated.
However, Marigny also fathered Eulalie Mandeville with a servant. Eulalie became one of New Orleans' wealthiest free women of color. In 1808, she moved to the corner of Dauphine and Barracks where she established a thriving dry goods business and lived until her death.

During the mid 1700's Jean Baptiste Destrehan purc

During the mid 1700's Jean Baptiste Destrehan purchased the property on which our building is housed. Destrehan, who was the Colonial Treasurer of France, tore down the cottage that Trepagnier had built and erected a "New Orleans home that was so grand it was second only to the governor's mansion." At the time the governor's residence was located next door, home to the Presbytere now.

According to Wikipedia: D'Estrehan is credited with the completion of the Harvey Canal on the west bank of the Mississippi River in 1739, which connected the river with Barataria Bay to the south and thus to the Gulf of Mexico. The canal work took many years. He cultivated indigo as a commodity crop on his west bank plantation. In 1746, d'Estrehan was appointed as Comptroller of the colony. He held both this position and the treasurer position until his death in 1765.

Did you know that the plot of land upon which our restaurant stands was once owned by Claude Trepagnier who, along with Iberville and Bienville, landed in Mobile aboard the Renommee? Claude assisted with establishing forts along the Mississippi River and Mobile, which became the first Capitol of Louisiana Territory. Claude, after moving from Mobile, settled his family in New Orleans in 1719 where he operated a trading post. According to historical records, the Trepagnier home was located on the corner of Chartres and St. Ann. Claude Trepagnier died in 1724 and his estate, which included our corner of the city, was valued at 27,104 livres.
