It's December and we have kicked off the Réveillo

It's December and we have kicked off the Réveillon season in New Orleans. Réveillon, French for Awakening, is a special meal that was celebrated by Creoles after Christmas Eve mass in New Orleans during the 1800s. Given our proximity to the Cathedral, it's quite plausible that Réveillon was celebrated here, in our building, during that time. Today, local restaurants serve the famous repast throughout the month of December. We will be serving Chef Erik Veney's Reveillon Menu every evening until December 23rd. You are invited to be a part of the celebration and continue the tradition with us.

Have you heard the enthralling story of our late neighbor, Micaela Almonester, Baroness de Pontalba?

Micaela Almonester's family arranged a marriage between her and a distant cousin, Celestin Pontalba, primarily as a business arrangement to safeguard the wealth of both families. Initially, Micaela's marriage to Celestin was successful, and she bore him five children. However, as her father-in-law, the Baron Pontalba, became increasingly greedy and dissatisfied with her agreed-upon dowry, he began to torment Micaela.

After numerous disputes over Micaela's attempts to protect her fortune, the Baron erupted in rage. One day, he stormed into her bedroom and shot her with a pair of dueling pistols. As the first shot rang out, she pleaded, "Don't! I'll give you everything." He responded coldly, "No, you are going to die," and fired three more times, striking her in the chest.

One bullet passed through her hand, which she had instinctively raised to shield herself. Despite her injuries, Micaela managed to escape her attacker and collapsed into the arms of her maid, who had rushed upstairs upon hearing the gunshots. With the Baron in hot pursuit, Micaela was dragged to the drawing room, where she fell to the floor, crying out for help. The Baron stood over her unconscious, bleeding body but did not fire again. He later returned to his study and committed suicide.

The Baroness miraculously survived the attack and returned to her beloved New Orleans in 1848. Having inherited her mother's entire fortune, she embarked on an ambitious project, designing and developing the Pontalba Buildings. In addtion, Micaela was instrumental in renaming Place d'Armes to Jackson Square. And as a further testament to her influence, she partially funded the bronze equestrian statue of her friend, Andrew Jackson.

It may be difficult to discern from our Balcony unless you've had at least one Brandy Milk Punch, but if you focus in on the cast iron railing, you will find the letters A and P incorporated into the design of the wrought iron. Those are the initials of Almonester and Pontalba. Peculiarly, the Pontalba buildings adjacent to our restaurant are owned by the State.
